WSRID’s Professional Development Committee Proudly Presents:

C. R. I. S. P.

Collaborative  Reading  Independent  Study  Program

Examining cultures while curled up on your couch!

Each quarter, the Professional Development Committee will announce a selected book.  Turn in the below application with the small joining fee, and contact U Bookstore to get the text.   To receive credit for ACET, fill out your independent study paperwork at and send it to Judy Forbes and you're ready to go!  We will have a message board for CRISP members to post and read messages about the selected text, and on-line discussion sessions.   At the end of each quarter, we will invite an expert on the chosen topic to facilitate a formal on-line discussion.  We encourage and invite the Deaf community to join!!  Your insight is valued and we want to hear from you!! The more diverse the group, the more perspectives we examine and the more we learn!

The Spring Quarter Selection is:

Bury Me Standing:  The Gypsies and their Journey  by Isabel Fonseca

This book examines the experience of oppression of the Roma people in Europe.  The lives of the 'gypsies', or, as they prefer, Roma, have many parallels in the Deaf community. They were forced into special schools that suppressed their native language; they died in concentration camps (as did Deaf people), and have been marginalized by the majority culture of whatever country they call home. While this book does not address the issues of the Deaf, we hope to better understand the biases that exist when two cultures live side by side.

If we receive your application by March 31st, there is a 10% discount on the purchase of your book at U Bookstore. (Applications will still be accepted after 3/31 – but the bookstore needs to know how many books to order) J  After April 1st, purchase text at U Bookstore at: 4326 University Way NE or on-line at, or by calling 1-800-335-READ   Tell them you are a part of the WSRID bookclub to receive the 10% discount.  U Bookstore offers free shipping.
