The poignancy of Wilder’s other classic, Our Town, transforms to the zaniness of dysfunctional
families in The Skin of Our Teeth,
a comedy about a typical American family
– in a not-so-typical American family drama.
Wilder’s allegorical Everyfamily (think Adam and Eve, married for 5,000
years and representing the whole human
race) live in a world continuously at risk of being trampled by a
dinosaur, threatened by an iceberg, ravaged by a flood and ruined by war. The style of the play is joyfully absurdist, as
Wilder – way ahead of his time in stylistic daring – playfully shifts
the tone from moment to moment, and has his characters occasionally stop
the play to comment on or question the action. In the end, The Skin of Our Teeth is a tribute to the
indomitable human will not just to survive,
but to persevere until we triumph over natural and man-made disasters alike
– if only by the skin of our teeth.
Artistic Director Bartlett Sher directs an ensemble cast of 16 led by
Howie Seago, an award-winning deaf actor, writer, director, producer and teacher
whose work has been seen nationally and internationally, on stage and screen,
including the critically acclaimed film, Beyond
Silence. As an actor, Mr. Seago has been honored several times
including the prestigious Helen Hayes award. He has toured with the National
Theatre of the Deaf (NTD) and starred in many NTD plays. In addition to his
acting credits, he helped create the Emmy winning TV show Rainbow’s End for deaf children.
Currently, Mr. Seago is the Director of the Shared Reading Video Outreach
